I really never believed that the Democrats would do this. Democrat senators Reid and Durbin acted today to block payment of veterans' benefits and salaries for the National Guard. They also prevented the funding of the National Institutes of Health and the many cancer programs run through that agency. Since the start of the partial government shutdown, House Republicans passed measures to fund these important programs and sent them on to the Senate. To be clear, these measures also had substantial support from Democrats in the House. Once the bills got to the Senate, however, Reid, the Senate Democrat leader acted to block them. He would rather have a political position than to do what is right. It is just disgusting to watch the naked political calculation at work.
