Getting Nancy Reagan Wrong

Perhaps the line that is most associated with former first lady Nancy Reagan is the slogan of her fight against the use of illegal drugs:  "Just Say No!"  That sentiment is making a comeback at the White House these days, but not in the way that most people would expect.  What America has been watching is a president who is just saying no to offer after offer to allow the increase of the national debt and the spending for the government.

President Obama went for two months saying no to negotiations.  How many times did we hear that Obama would not negotiate with "terrorists" or "hostage takers" or some other nasty name that he stuck on the GOP?  All Obama would accept was a "clean" continuing resolution or a "clean" increase in the debt ceiling.  As a result, we got three different attempts by the House to pass a spending bill which were shot down in the Senate as part of the "Just Say No" strategy of Obama and the Obamacrats.  There were no counter offers.  There were no discussions.  There were no negotiations.  There was only Nancy Reagan's word:  NO.  So we now have a partial government shutdown.

Then we moved on to more nay saying from the White House.  The House GOP passed bills to fund the NIH so as to allow cancer treatments to continue.  Obama said no.  The House GOP passed a bill to allow for veteran's benefits to continue.  Obama said no.  The House passed a bill to force payment of death benefits for heroes killed in action in Afghanistan.  The White House said no, but finally relented once both the House and Senate unanimously passed the bill and the American people rose up in righteous anger at the travesty that Obama was foisting upon the country.

Then, suddenly things changed.  As Obama's poll numbers tanked because he was saying only NO, he started to negotiate.  He invited the House GOP leadership to the White House.  The Republicans came with a new offer.  They would pass a short term debt increase and negotiate the budget after that.  Obama's response was to say no.  He had no counter offer, he just said no.  The GOP tweaked their offer and Obama's new response was NO, NO, A THOUSAND TIMES NO!!!

Now, the Democrats are supposedly negotiating with the Republicans in the Senate.  But truly, it does not matter.  With their new favorite word of NO, the Democrats and particularly Obama are acting like toddlers in the midst of the terrible twos.  The infantile cry of NO, NO is reverberating across Washington.  Never have we seen such a childish refusal to do what is best for the country.  It will not serve anyone's interests to see the debt ceiling force cutbacks in government spending.  Those cuts should be made on a reasoned basis after consideration of what will benefit the country.  But the Democrats just say no.  I expect this week that they will bring some group of foot stomping kids to the Capitol or the White House, so that the kids can keep stomping their feet while the Democrats say no elsewhere in the nation's capital.

Nancy Reagan wanted Americans to say no to drugs, not to reality.  Obama and his party are getting her message wrong.  It is time that they stop acting like spoiled children and start doing what is best for the country.
