Alicia Caldwell is a reporter for Bloomberg news. Today, she covered the nomination of Jeh Johnson to be Secretary of Homeland Security and, as the principal point of her article made one of the most outrageous statements of the year in the press. Here is what she said:
Obama's selection of Johnson suggests the agency will be stepping back from its emphasis on immigration to focus more on protecting the nation from attack.
I actually checked to make sure that this was not a parody that somehow got picked up by the news services. It's not. This is an actual article written by someone who claims to be a reporter.
I think just a bit of history is worthy of discussion here. About a year ago, president Obama announced that the federal government would no longer enforce immigration law against those who came to this country illegally as children with their parents. Then Obama stopped enforcement of immigration laws against all but criminals. Then the Department of Homeland Security stopped even taking the names of illegals who were apprehended by local police unless the subjects had been convicted of a crime; mere arrests were insufficient as a basis for concern. On top of this, the border in many areas between the USA and Mexico is hardly guarded and hundreds or thousands cross illegally every day.
So now consider that Johnson's appointment is supposed to have DHS "stepping back from its emphasis on immigration". The problem, of course, is that DHS does not emphasize enforcement of the immigration laws; that has all been stopped for quite some time now. Only in the imagination of an airheaded reporter who faithfully accepts everything the administration says could one conceive of that line.
I wonder what this reporter will write next? Maybe it will be a story about how al Qaeda is stepping back from crusading for Christianity. Perhaps, Caldwell will write about Ted Cruz stepping back from his fight to make sure Obamacare is rolled out and fully enforced. Who knows, maybe Caldwell can write about how Chris Christie has given up eating donuts and has become a vegan.
There really is not much point to having something called Bloomberg News if the articles it puts out have no relation to reality.
