There used to be an ad for Salem cigarettes that claimed that "You can take Salem out of the country, but you can't take the country out of Salem." Much the same can be said about the senator from Minnesota, Al Franken. No matter where you put Al Franken, he remains a nasty, angry clown. Yesterday, Franken was presiding in the Senate Chamber while Mitch McConnell spoke; Franken was sitting directly behind the podium and was making faces and generally mugging to make fun of McConnell as the debate moved on. Franken was even making noises in the background. When he finished speaking, McConnell moved away from the microphone and told Franken, This isn't Saturday Night Live."
Franken has apologized, but the point of the exchange is just this: Franken is a boor who cannot control himself.
When Joe Wilson had an outburst during the State of the Union speech and said that President Obama's statement during the speech was a lie, he was properly criticized for undermining the dignity of the occassion, even though he was correct. Franken has done the same here. I hope that the people of Minnesota remember this when Al runs for re-election.
