Halloween at Yale

I've been watching the upset at Yale over an email discussing potential limitations on Halloween costumes.  Basically, one of the masters in one of the houses at Yale (who also happens to be a child development specialist) sent out a message in which she suggested that the students back off from criticism of costumes and instead of seeking to ban some, use them as a basis for discussion.  She suggested that the students engage in (gasp!) free speech which respects the rights of others to have differing viewpoints.  She also said that it was not for the school administration to decide who could wear what costume.  The reaction has been growing larger and larger.  Those who are perpetually aggrieved by real or imagined slights, have been horrified by the lack of sensitivity displayed by the email.  According to some students, there are many at Yale who have been so upset by this invasion of their safe space that they have been unable to attend class or to focus on their studies.

What we are seeing here is the ultimate contradiction of some of the left's ideas come to fruition.  Imagine, if you would, that the Yale administration were to impose a requirement that students wear uniforms on campus.  The justification for such a move would be that it would remove any feeling among the students that one or the other was superior because of the nature of his or her clothing.  There could even be one uniform used both for men and women so that transgendered students would not be forced into an unsafe space.  There could also be required hair styles for men and women.  It would be like China during the Cultural Revolution when the nation adopted this sort of policy (and millions were executed).  Now imagine the reaction from the students.  Is there anyone who thinks that a dress code would be adopted at a university like Yale?  I sure don't.  But there would be total equality, and that total equality would be rejected in favor of freedom of expression.
