This morning, Politico was claiming (falsely) that Ben Carson admitted "fabricating" the story of his possible attendance at West Point. I wrote about that earlier. It was a disgusting and dishonest hit piece from a hack journalist. As the pushback about the story continued through the day, Politico changed the headline and then the content of the story. It no longer says that Carson "fabricated" anything or that he "admitted" anything. In fact, the whole thing is turning into a non-story. Nevertheless, there are a great many other media outlets that ran to publish the story that Carson admitted fabricating the story. Donald Trump also ran to talk about the story. All this was done as if the Politico story were true (which is was not) or even published in good faith (which it also was not.) It's interesting to see that as Politico made changes throughout the day to the story, it never indicated that it had made any corrections to the misstatements in the earlier versions. Here is a rather succinct site that shows both the original and corrected versions of the Politico story.
I am not a Carson supporter. I do think, however, that Politico owes Carson a major apology.
The guy who wrote the original story ought to be fired for incompetence, but they are probably ery happy at Politico to get this phony story out there.
