Through More than The Looking Glass

In recent days, we have seen a whole series of items that show the bizarre world of the American left.  I'm not talking here about disputes regarding political policies.  No, I am talking about instances in which the left proceeds not just in ignorance of the actual facts, but rather in reliance on a delusional reality that is far from anything real.  We have gotten to the point where there is a large segment of America that believes in liberal dogma more than in reason.

The late senator Danial Patrick Moynihan once said, "Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts."  That statement is undeniable.  Nevertheless, large chunks of the left no longer accept it as valid; they do indeed have their own facts and will not let them go.

Consider this example:

In The New Yorker,  there is a serious piece entitled "Why a Climate Deal Is The Best Hope For Peace".  The authors contend that the world needs to focus on climate change in order to bring peace in Syria.  That's a ridiculous argument, but it is an opinion, but the authors also state the "fact" that it is now accepted that climate change is one of the main causes of the Syrian Civil War.  These liberals tell us that everyone knows and accepts that the killing in Syria is due to climate change.  Think about that supposed "fact".  First, there is substantial dispute whether there really is any climate change at all of the sort that the left talks about.  The only non-biased and non-adjusted planetary measurement of atmospheric temperatures come from the readings taken by NASA satellites.  Those readings show no rise in temperature over the last 18 years.  That means NO WARMING!!!  It also means to a scientific certainty that all the models that the left points to as the basis for their climate change theory are WRONG.  That does not matter to the left, however.  They just say global warming is "settled science".  Obviously, if the existence of man made climate change is not settled, it cannot be commonly accepted that it caused a war.  Second, the idea that the civil war is a result of climate change is discussed in some of the more extreme and delusional precincts of the left, but it is not commonly accepted.  It is not even a majority view around the world.

Later in the same article, the authors discuss the rising sea levels due to melting ice at the polar regions of the Earth.  To them, this is a fact.  The only problem with that fact is that it is not true.  Certainly, there are areas where ice is melting at the poles.  There are also areas, however, where ice is accumulating.  Recent measures by satellite of the exact quantities of ice at the poles have shown that over the last twenty years, the quantity of ice at the poles has increased not decreased.  That means less water in the oceans, not more.  In other words, the actual measurements (the facts) are directly contrary to what the authors of the article discuss as the supposed facts.  Again, delusional belief wins out over actual facts with these people.

This belief in political dogma over actual facts pops up all the time.  President Obama has said that the USA has a robust vetting process that makes is essentially impossible for a terrorist to come into the country as a refugee.  Senator Sessions of Alabama releases a list which names 15 different men who were admitted in the last two years as refugees and who then turned out to be terrorists.  These are the fifteen who were caught.  We don't know how many more have not been caught and are still waiting as part of sleeper cells for orders.  In short, Sessions produced fact that clearly show that Obama's claim of a foolproof vetting process is wrong.  The White House response has been to repeat that claim as if saying again that the vetting process is effective makes it so.

The refusal by the left to recognize the real facts is very bad for the country.  The refusal by the president to recognize real facts is a disaster.
