Here's today's big news: Bob Dole has endorsed Jeb Bush for president. I guess that means the race for the nomination is over. After all, millions of Republicans have been waiting on the edge of their seats to find out who Bob Dole would endorse.
The truth, of course, is that Bob Dole's endorsement will sway no one to vote for Bush. Maybe some in the Dole family might be moved, but even for them I doubt it. What the Dole endorsement does accomplish, however, is to once again emphasize just how much Bush is the candidate only of the GOP establishment of the last century. Bush is the last gasp of the old guard to take control of the party once again. That ought to be enough to get many people to stop considering Bush. Now, in fairness, Bush did not need the Dole endorsement to get people to drop him from consideration. Bush has managed to do that on his own in the four debates among the candidates. Look at last night's debate. Bush shook off Trump's description of him as "low energy". He was so forceful that he is likely to start being called the "energizer tortoise".
By the way, I mean no disrespect to Bob Dole in all this. I just think that his endorsement in the GOP means about as much as an endorsement from Walter Mondale would mean among Democrats. Zilch.
