There's some other things about the elections yesterday that ought to be noted:
1. The proposal to legalize marijuana in Ohio and to have it sold by only ten government approved suppliers lost big. Most Americans still are not in favor of making the stuff legal.
2. The so called "equal rights" measure in Houston was crushed at the polls. That's not surprising. It's one thing to have changes that don't affect others adversely; same sex marriage and non-discrimination in employment fit that category. The Houston measure went down to defeat, however, because it went too far. Opposition was centered on things like requiring access to opposite sex bathrooms for people who "identify" as the other sex. The question became whether or not little girls should be forced to share public bathrooms with adult men who "identify" as women.
3. The sheriff in San Francisco who went overboard in supporting sanctuary city rules got defeated. The defeated sheriff had a lot of strikes against him, though, so it's not clear if the sanctuary city issue had any role in his defeat.
4. In Virginia, the Democrats had launched an all out effort to win back at least one house of the state legislature. The Republicans won even though the Democrats spent millions of dollars on multiple state senate races. Most of the comments I have seen from local Democrats blamed "Obama fatigue" for the loss.
5. In Bridgeport, Connecticut, the mayor elect is a former mayor who was indicted, convicted and sent to prison for corruption. Now he's back. It's somehow fitting that Bridgeport was the home of P.T.Barnum.
