The Difference Between Canada and the USA

Canada's new government is going to accept 25,000 refugees from Syria by March 1, 2016.  There are rules on background checks that must be met, but the most interesting thing about the Canadian plan is the description of who will be admitted.  According to the government these are the categories to be accepted:  "Refugees will include complete families, women at risk, gays and lesbians, and single men identified as vulnerable due to membership in the LGBT community or if they are accompanying parents as part of a family."  So Canada is admitting only full families, women at risk and gays/lesbians.  That makes sense, although it is not perfect.  Terrorists are not likely to bring their wives and children along on a suicide mission.  Nor are they likely to take aged parents along either.  The allowance for gays provides less protection.  It would be easy for a terrorist to say he has a different sexual preference.  After all, I doubt that anyone will put them to the test.

Imagine for a moment that the USA announced a similar policy.  Okay, don't imagine it.  President Obama will never announce any limitation on the refugees to be let in.  It would be easy to work something out in this regard, but it seems that Obama would rather have a political battle on this than to worry about the actual safety of the American people.

I wish Obama cared as much about winning military battles as he does about winning political ones.
