The Senate voted against an amendment offered by the Democrats yesterday which would have added some requirements for background checks prior to purchase of guns. The details of the proposed amendment are really unimportant; there was never any chance that the measure would pass. The vote was just a cynical ploy by the Democrats to make it look like they were doing something in response to the terror attack in San Bernardino. You know the strategy: the federal government run by the Democrats (Obama) failed to stop the terror attack and failed to degrade or destroy ISIS, so the party tried to move to gun control and blame the Republicans for everything that happened.
The problem with this strategy is that nothing in the proposed legislation would have had any effect on the San Bernardino attack. That attack took place in California which already has in place the measures which were in the proposed amendment, so the Democrat's proposal would not change the law in California. Even more important, the weapons used by Syed Farook and his wife were purchased in full compliance with the very laws that the Democrats were proposing yesterday. That's right, the terrorist passed the background checks and the waiting periods and the rest of the measures that are the Democrats' answer to terrorism. (Remember, the White House spokesman actually said yesterday that president Obama believes that gun control legislation would combat terrorism.)
There are many measures that could be taken to combat terrorism here at home. None of the Democrats is even willing to talk about those measures. Instead, they stick to their preconceived narrative of gun control as a panacea. The problem is that we now have Americans being killed in terror attacks and the Democrats are off in fantasy land.
The one job of government that is more important than any other is to keep the country safe. The Democrats have demonstrated once again that they don't have a clue how to do that. The threat is real. The response from the Dems is truly frightening.
