The New Anti-Terror Coalition

A new coalition of 34 Islamic countries was announced in Saudi Arabia yesterday.  The group will have a headquarters in Riyadh.  It seems only to include Sunni Moslems but not Shiites.  Iran is not a member state; nor, it seems, is Iraq.  While many of these countries have large military forces, nothing was said about any agreement to use those forces to confront the terrorists.  In many ways, it is like the anti-ISIS coalition that president Obama and his people trot out periodically to show how well the fight against ISIS is going.  In other words, it seems to be all talk but no action.

The Saudis, however, are at the head of this coalition.  They have been engaged in anti-terrorist activities of their own.  They actively fight against the Houthi rebels in Yemen.  The Houthis, of course, are Shiites supported by Iran.  The Saudis are also active in their support for Sunni rebels in Syria who are fighting against the Alawaite forces of Assad (a Shiite sect) who are also supported by Iran (Shiite).

One has to wonder if the Saudis and this coalition are directed at terrorism or at Shiites.  We will have to wait and see.
