Another Blow For Free Speech

The Supreme Court ruled today that the aggregate limits on federal political contributions are unconstitutional.  It was a major victory for free speech.  According to the opinion of the Chief Justice, the government can no longer limit the total amount that a person can contribute in an election cycle (although the maximum set for contributions to a single candidate remains in effect.)  Individuals are free to support as many candidates as they want; government limits on total contributions act as limitations on the ability to support particular candidates and they cannot be enforced.

This ruling is sure to bring howls of protest from the left.  The Democrats and the liberal fascists want to limit the ability of private citizens to make their voices heard while at the same time allowing groups that favor Democrats (like unions) to spend huge amounts to promote the candidates they support.  To accomplish this, the Democrats portrayed the limits they placed on free speech as moves designed to fight corruption and undue influence.  The analysis of the Supreme Court revealed the fallacy of that portrayal.
