Was Sharpton an FBI Informant?

The Drudge Report is linking to a story today about how Al Sharpton was a confidential FBI informant decades ago.  According to the linked story, Sharpton spied on the New York mafia families because the FBI had evidence against him and he wanted to stay out of jail.

All I can say is "so what!"

Al Sharpton is a loud mouth who promoted race based controversy for decades.  First there was Tawana Brawley who falsely charged various white law enforcement officials in Dutchess County New York with rape and kidnapping.  That controversy resulted in ruin for various officials, but it also ended with Sharpton losing a libel suit brought by one of those officials.  Sharpton, of course, claimed poverty and got off without suffering any meaningful consequences for his actions.

Then there was Freddy's Fashion Mart, a white owned store in Harlem where Sharpton incited a mob against the store owner.  Later, the mob burned down the store and many were killed inside.  Sharpton was never prosecuted for his role in that fiasco.

Then there was the riots in Crown Heights where Sharpton intimated that a prominent rabbi had run down a seven year old black boy and just driven off.  The anger resulting from this false story led to nearly a week of rioting.

Does today's news mean that the reason why Sharpton was never prosecuted for his involvement in all these messes was because he had friends at the FBI who protected him?  We don't know,

One think we do know, however:  No one, and I mean no one who cares about improving race relations in America, should watch Sharpton's TV show on MSNBC.  The sooner this guy is bounced from the media spotlight, the better.
