This Time It is Early Enough to Act

In the last five years, we have watched as country after country around the world has undergone upheavals while the USA either sat and watched or actually worked to make things worse.  Here is just a partial list:

1.  In Iran, there were massive street demonstrations against the government of the mullahs.  President Obama did not even mention the demonstrations, and he certainly never announced American support for those seeking democracy in Iran.  The theocracy used force and crushed the opposition.

2.  In Egypt, America watched protests develop against the regime of Hosni Mubarak, a key American ally in the region.  This time, unlike with Iran, Obama jumped into the mix and demanded that Mubarak resign.  America also worked to make sure that Mubarak got no support from any of our allies.  Mubarak was ousted and the Moslem Brotherhood took control.  That led to violent attacks on the Christian community in Egypt, repression against the news media and free speech in the country, the ouster of all sorts of people across Egypt who did not support the Moslem Brotherhood, the opening of supply lines from Egypt to the terrorists in Hamas, and the effective dissolution of the Egyptian parliament so that the president could rule by decree.  Through all this descent into chaos and tyranny, Obama supported the Moslem Brotherhood government.  Obama aligned himself with the jihadist group in control.  When the public finally had enough and rebelled, Obama still supported the Moslem Brotherhood.  When the military stepped in an ousted the Moslem Brotherhood, America threatened to cut off aid to Egypt in retaliation and then Obama actually delayed help to the new regime.  As a result, neither side in Egypt has much use for Washington or Obama at the moment.

3.  In Syria, the dictator Assad was faced with protests by peaceful marchers.  His response was to send snipers to shoot down protesters at random.  This caused an escalating level of anger which meant more protests.  Assad used more snipers, then helicopters, then artillery to attack the protests.  Through all this slaughter, Obama was silent.  At a point where American support could have resulted in the popular opposition ousting Assad, Obama did nothing.  Instead, Obama refused to provide any help for the moderate elements of the rebels, so the terrorists affiliated with al Qaeda flooded into the country and took over the opposition.  Then Obama still did nothing except to announce that America would not tolerate the use of chemical weapons.  When Assad used those weapons, Obama again did nothing.

4.  Then there is Ukraine.  Here too, Obama followed a policy of doing nothing when it would have been possible to act and then telling the country that it was too late to do anything.

Today, we are watching another situation develop.  This time the site is in Venezuela.  The government of president Maduro is using heavy arms against the many people who oppose his rule.  Maduro and his predecessor Chavez have managed to take a country that should be extremely rich and destroy its economy.  At the same time, the government is prohibiting any expression of opposition and suppressing all sorts of freedoms.  And what has Obama said?  NOTHING.  Remember, Venezuela is in our hemisphere.  It is in our back yard.  And Obama says and does NOTHING!  America could easily help tip the balance to get rid of Maduro right now.  Obama, however, is just going to wait.  After all, by doing nothing, Obama can watch as Venezuela self destructs and leaves tens of millions of people in that country starving and destitute.
