Hamas and Fatah

The terrorists at Hamas and the al Fatah party of Palestinian "president" Abbas have agreed on a rapprochement.   Supposedly, these two entities are going to cooperate and then hold an election in six months so as to select a new government for the Palestinian Authority.

This is both nonsense and extremely revealing.

1.  There will be no election.  The last parliamentary elections were nearly ten years ago.  At that time, the Hamas terrorists won control of the Palestinian parliament but they were blocked from taking their seats by the al Fatah controlled police.  The new parliament never met.  Instead, Hamas launched a rebellion that led to their takeover of Gaza.  In the years since then, Hamas has held no elections in Gaza and Fatah has held no elections in the rest of the Palestinian territories.  So called president Abbas is now in the ninth year of his four year term.  He just stays in power because he never leaves.  He has zero legitimacy.  Without a doubt, neither of these entities will risk power by holding an election.

2.  For many years, Hamas has been killing people in Gaza who support Fatah while Fatah has been getting rid of people in the rest of the territories who support Hamas.  Are we really to believe that they will now sing Kumbaya and live together in peace?  That's not very likely.

3.  So there won't be a real deal and there certainly won't be elections.  The important point here, however, is that Fatah is embracing a terror group that not only calls for the end of Israel like Fatah but which also calls for death for all the Israelis.  Even a complete dolt like secretary of state Kerry will have to see this move as a step away from peace.  No sane individual could ever tell the Israelis to talk peace with people whose goal is to kill all Israeli citizens.  Remember, this is not some old statement on a youtube video (which was supposedly enough when Islamic terrorists killed the American ambassador to Libya).  No, these are oft repeated statements made by terrorists who launch missiles every day or so in attempts to kill random Israelis.

The proper response to this latest news would be for the USA to stop its involvement in the "peace process" and to cut off all aid to the Palestinian Authority until such time as it both renounces violence and accepts that Israel as a Jewish state will remain after any peace agreement.  Of course, that would take courage, vision and understanding by president Obama and his foreign policy team.  Sadly, that group does not even have one of the three.
