The Future of Africa

What is the most important country in Africa?  Here is a hint:  it is in the middle of a civil war with Islamic terrorists on one side.  The answer is Nigeria.  It has the largest population and the largest economy on the African continent.  It has huge oil reserves.  Nigeria's future tells us much about what the future of Africa will be.  Right now, that future is in doubt.

In the last two days there have been two major attacks by Boko Haram, the Islamic terror group which is trying to take over the country.  First, there was a huge terror bombing at a bus station in Lagos.  Over 70 people were killed.  Then, Boko Haram attacked a high school in the northern part of the country, burned the school down and kidnapped over 100 girls who were students at the school.  According to al Jazeera, Boko Haram needed the girls to be "cooks and sex slaves."  It is important to note that there was no outrage in the report in al Jazeera; it was just an every day, matter of fact report that 100 plus high school girls were kidnapped by Boko Haram to be sex slaves.

If there were any doubt about the dangerous course of events in Nigeria, these two attacks should settle them.  We are witnessing the potential destruction of the most important country in Africa.  Imagine a country with over 170 million people falling into the abyss of a religious war.

From our perspective, the next obvious question is what, if anything, the USA is doing about the situation in Nigeria.  Right now, the answer is the usual one when it comes to American foreign policy these days.  The Obama administration is doing nothing.  It seems to be the all purpose response used by the Obamacrats whenever there is some sort of problem abroad.

I am not advocating for any sort of military involvement in Nigeria, so don't bother to send the email screaming about that.  I agree that the USA is not the policeman of the world.  That said, however, it does not mean that we ought to ignore this situation just because Obama is too busy going to fund raisers to do his job.
