The Drudge Report is highlighting a story about high school students in Topeka Kansas who have signed a petition asking the school board to rescind the invitation to First Lady Michelle Obama to speak at their graduation. The graduation ceremony is for approximately 2000 seniors at five area high schools. The petition asking that Obama not speak has been signed by 1200 people already.
According to news reports, the students mean no disrespect to the First Lady. They just want the graduation to be their day rather than some political event. Also, since there are at most 8000 seats in the hall where the ceremony will take place, they do not want the press and security and all the other hoopla that comes with a visit by Obama to deprive them of tickets that would allow their entire family to come to graduation. Some students have suggested that Obama speak at a ceremony at the museum set up to commemorate the Brown v. Board of Education decision (which is the supposed reason for Obama's visit).
The students seem both reasonable and respectful. Most likely, we will shortly hear all sorts of outrage from MSNBC and those like Al Sharpton who see racism in every happening in America. Just wait and watch.
