There is a Rasmussen poll out today regarding the 2014 senate election in Illinois. As expected, Dick Durbin has a double digit lead on his GOP opponent. For all the talk of Republican pickups in the senate, no one has claimed that Illinois would be one of the states where the seat flips from Democrat to Republican. Durbin has been thought to be totally sure of re-election. That being said, it interests me to see that Durbin is getting only 51% of the vote in the poll. For a long term entrenched Democrat in a state as blue as Illinois, that is a surprisingly poor showing. Now I am not indicating that the seat may flip; it won't. What is happening, however, is that some part of the Democrat's coalition is deserting the party. If that move continues, the GOP may pick up ten or more senate seats in November and take control of that chamber.
