In a move designed to show solidarity with America's allies in eastern Europe and to frighten Russia with American resolve, the USA announced yesterday that it would be holding large scale military exercises together with the Polish army in Poland. A smaller but similar move will take place in Estonia.
So, here's the problem with this latest move by Obama and his brain trust: in Poland there will be fewer than 200 American soldiers involved with the exercises and in Estonia there should be less than half that number. That's right. Obama is going to frighten Putin into backing away from Ukraine by sending about 200 men to Poland and Estonia for a week or so. Even for a group of idiots like the president's foreign policy advisors, this is a dumb move. I can just hear them discussing it.
Secretary of Defense Hagel: "Wait, is 200 more than 3000?"
Secretary of State Kerry: "We ought to send 210. That's ten times 21 and this move is so twenty-first century."
National Security Advisor Susan Rice: "Mr. President, our best intelligence says that Putin is actually in Ukraine in response to a youtube video about making borsht in which they left out the beets. He is just insulted and angry. It will pass."
UN Ambassador Samantha Power: "We have to be mindful of how this will look to other countries. Many in the third world will see these 200 soldiers as an American expeditionary force seeking to impose an imperialistic solution on the native people of eastern Europe. I recommend that we cut the force by a third."
President Obama: "I really don't have time for this. There's a fundraiser in Beverly Hills that I have to get to, and I was hoping to get in eighteen holes this afternoon. Do any of you want to take a selfie with me?"
