David Letterman is retiring from CBS next year. First word from CBS is that it has a plan to keep its audience. It is that it is planning on offering the time slot to Betty White for a talk show.
Seriously, Letterman really is retiring. He will be gone some time in 2015 at the latest. My guess is that CBS will try for something totally different to counter the Tonight Show where Jimmy Fallon is having great success. We will have to wait and see what CBS comes up with, but knowing the insight that CBS has brought to this sort of show over the years, I am betting on someone like Ellen. Another possibility is Ricky Gervais. We will have to wait to find out. They could always show reruns of old movies.
