According to reports in USA Today, Jews in the eastern parts of Ukraine that have been taken over by Russian militia are being told that they have to register themselves and their possessions or they will be expelled from the country and their possessions seized. Can this really be happening in 2014? Shouldn't this have ended with the Nazis? Will the traditional Russian anti-Semitism once again appear in eastern Europe?
There are about 70,000 Jews who live in the Ukraine with the largest number in Kiev. There are also significant numbers in three cities that are now under control of the Russian militias. In 1941, there were 2.7 million Jews, but most were killed by the Germans and the bulk of the remainder emigrated to Israel once the Soviet Union dissolved.
This latest outrage in the eastern Ukraine is absolutely intolerable. It needs to stop.
