A little less than a month ago, I wrote about the failure of the Pullitzer Prize panel to give an award to the National Enquirer for discovering that John Edwards was having an affair with his videographer. At the time it first ran the story, the Enquirer was ignored by the other media. Now, we will need to see what happens with today's story. According to the Enquirer, President Obama had an affair with a supporter named Vera Baker during the 2004 senate campaign. Before the Edwards affair, I would have ignored the Enquirer story as just another fantasy. Who knows, next week the Enquirer could reveal that Ms. Baker was actually an alien (from another planet -- not Mexico). given the Enquirer's recent track record, however, I am curious to see what happens next. The white House will surely deny the story. But it will indeed be interesting to see if the Enquirer has more info in the coming weeks. My guess is that the Enquirer would not publish such an explosive story if it does not have more proof than it has put forward so far. I hasten to add that I see no reason to believe that the story is either true or untrue. It is, however, a wrinkle that Obama certainly does not need.
Just as an aside, if true, the story means that all of the 2008 Democratic candidates were involved in affairs: Edwards, Obama and Clinton (although for Hillary her involvement was just through Bill). Of course, Biden and Dodd were also candidates, but they were so unsuccessful that I do not count them. Maybe they needed to cheat on their wives to win in the Democrat primaries.
