On Tuesday, president Obama will speak to the nation in an attempt to save from defeat the congressional resolution authorizing a strike on Syria. More than one commentator has said that Obama needs to "pull a rabbit out of his hat" to accomplish that feat. That, however, is an understatement. The momentum against the resolution has grown so strong in the House, that it is unlikely that anything Obama says will change the outcome.
As of late Friday afternoon, 225 congressmen had either announced that they would vote no or said that they were strongly leaning towards a no vote. Only 25 had said that they supported the resolution or were leaning towards such support. Among Democrats, the numbers were more than 3 to 1 against the resolution and the figures were even worse for Obama among Republicans. There are still close to 200 undecided votes, but even if they all support the resolution (a highly unlikely outcome), the resolution will still be defeated unless some folks change their mind.
This is the single worst defeat of Obama's presidency. And now we are stuck with him for another three years. That is not good for America and it is not good for the world.
