Now A New Middle East Threat -- Gaza May Be Invaded

Remember the Gaza Strip, that small bit of land nestled along the Mediterranean coast between Israel and Egypt?  It is back in the news.  Gaza, as you may recall is the part of the Palestinian territories where Hamas rules.  The Hamas terrorists rose up some years ago and threw out the forces of al Fatah, the party of Palestinian Authority president Abbas.  Since then, Hamas has used Gaza as a base for attacks against Israeli targets; the attacks come in the form of missiles launched from the territory and terrorists who attempt to infiltrate into Israel.  As you may recall, Israel used to rule the Gaza Strip but it moved out of the area and turned rule over to the Palestinians in a move towards peace.  In exchange the Israelis got a terror group on their doorsteps.  Things got so bad a few years back that the Israeli army moved back into Gaza to try to get rid of the terror groups weapons.

Well now we are back at a point where another military incursion into Gaza may be about to happen.  This time, however, the attack against Hamas would come from the Egyptian army, not the Israelis.  Hamas has been aiding terrorists in the Sinai area of Egypt in their strikes against Egyptian police and military forces.  The Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy warned today that there will be military action against Hamas in Gaza unless the aid to the terrorists stops.

It will be interesting to see what happens if the Egyptian army storms Gaza.  Remember, Egypt ruled the Gaza strip until 1967 when that area was lost to Israel in the Six Day War.  My guess is that all those groups around the world who were so upset when Israel moved into Gaza to stop the terror attacks a few years back will no bother to protest if the Egyptians make the same move.  Instead, these groups will treat the fight in much the same manner that they deal with the endless slaughter of Moslems by Moslems in Syria.  If the Israelis end up killing five people during a battle following a terror attack, there are marches in Europe.  On the other hand, if 120,000 Syrians die in massacres and senseless slaughter as Sunnis fight Shiites, no one in Europe seems to care.

One thing is certain:  no matter who does it, anyone who destroys the power of the terrorists of Hamas deserves the thanks of the world.
