I just read an article by Dana Milbank of the Washington Post in which he criticizes some Republicans in Congress for saying that president Obama has to make the case for a strike on Syria in which Obama explains the national interest that such an attack would promote as well as the nature of the strike and the risks that it would entail. In essence, Milbank is attacking the Republicans on the grounds that, according to him, they have no plan what to do in Syria and are just opposing what Obama has proposed. Even for Dana Milbank, this is ridiculous.
First of all, Obama has come to Congress to ask its assent for a military attack. It is to be Obama's plan or not; the Congress does not design military strategy. That is the job of the commander in chief, in other words, the president of the United States. Thus, there cannot and should not be a Republican plan for military action.
Second, Obama clearly is the one who needs to explain what he wants to do and why he thinks it is a good idea that will work. It is his plan; he is the one who ought to support it with argument.
Sadly, what Milbank seems to be doing is laying the groundwork to blame the Republicans if Congress does not approve a strike on Syria. That is sad. Milbank is supposed to be a reporter, not a cheerleader for the never-ending Obama campaign.
