Lois Lerner Saves Her Pension

Lois Lerner, the IRS official who seems to have led much of the offensive by the IRS against conservative groups and individuals before blaming it on others, is retiring according to an announcement by the IRS.  Lerner, of course, is the official who refused to testify before Congress on the grounds that she might incriminate herself.  She has been on paid leave since that time.

Since Lerner's refusal to testify, Congress has uncovered a raft of emails and testimony that make clear that Lerner was at the center of the IRS attack on conservatives.  Prior to her non-testimony, Lerner had tried to blame the mess on rogue agents in Cincinnati, but that all fell apart when the documents came out.  Indeed, Lerner was tied to one of the only two Obama political appointees at the IRS in leading the charge against the Tea Party.

After her refusal to testify, Lerner was asked to resign, but she refused.  As a result she was placed on paid leave where she has remained.  So why retire?

The answer is simple.  Lerner wants to make sure that her IRS pension from the government remains in place.  It was not enough to get paid a high salary for years while persecuting the Tea Party.  No, Lerner wants to be sure that she will continue to get paid for years to come.  If she retires, he pension is secure, something that would not be the case were she fired for cause.

Just remember this:  when the IRS scandal first became public five months ago, president Obama promised that he would get to the bottom of the mess and correct the problems at the IRS.  Here we are five months later, and Obama has done absolutely nothing regarding the IRS.  Indeed, Obama now calls the scandal a "phony" scandal.  If we are lucky, maybe Obama will retire like Lerner.
