The Washington Shootings

The numbers keep getting worse with regard to those killed and wounded at the Washington Navy Yard.  At last count there were 12 dead.  One of the shooters (if, indeed, there were more than one) is dead.  Two others are sought, and we have descriptions that are, at best, generic and, at worst, useless.  President Obama has already spoken about there being "another mass shooting" although we really do not know whether or not this was one crazy guy, three jihadists responding to the al Qaeda call for targeting "soft targets", or even revenge by the Syrians for recent events.  Two major news networks identified the one shooter, and then minutes later withdrew that report and basically said "nevermind".

There are, however, a few truths that we do know for certain.

1.  At least eleven people went to work at the Navy Yard this morning, but will not be coming home.  They did not deserve to die.

2.  More folks were wounded, again people who are blameless.

3.  There was a prompt response by the relevant police forces and some of them are among the dead and wounded.  They deserve a commendation for their bravery.

4.  Before the politicians begin posturing about what caused this attack (a youtube video, workplace disputes, terrorism, etc.), we ought to get the facts.  No matter what the truth, we ought not let this event get swept under the rug by the federal government or twisted into something that it is not.

5.  We each should say a prayer for the speedy recovery of all of the wounded and for the prompt capture of any remaining shooters.
