Yesterday, we heard reported that Attorney General Barr has tasked the US Attorney for Connecticut to investigate the origins of the spying by the intelligence agencies on the Trump campaign in 2016. It's another step forward in the investigation that Barr told Congress he was undertaking. It's also a major source of worry for those who were involved in the spying like Clapper, Comey, Brennan etc. If the reports are correct that FISA warrants were obtained in 2016 and then renewed based upon the Trump Dossier which the FBI knew was not only unverified but also actually false, then there is real criminal jeopardy for those involved. We'll have to wait and see what the investigation uncovers, but this is not a casual event.
So how is the mainstream media reporting this? Within the last hour, I hear CBS News cover the story on the radio in my car. The reporter gave two reasons why Barr has given this assignment to the US Attorney. The first reason is that Barr wants "to placate" the President. The second is that Barr wants to be able to tell the American people that the investigation into Trump's campaign by the intelligence agencies was proper in all regards.
Think about that. According to CBS, the Attorney General just wants to get the crazy president off his back so he's opened an investigation in order to be able to tell the president that he's actually doing something (which, of course, is unnecessary). And if that's not right, then Barr is just trying to prove the innocence of the intelligence community against all those scurrilous charges that conservative media (and the facts) are leveling at them.
This is a grave mistake by the media. The media is risking its credibility with its main remaining audience, the left, by reporting in this way. If the investigation shows the rather obvious impropriety in the spying on the Trump campaign and some high profile names get indicted and convicted, people will remember that CBS lied to them about the reason behind this investigation. The shock of the indictments and the truth will be much, much greater. They are risking too much just to keep up the spin.
