If you just read the mainstream media, you would think that the Trump administration is collapsing. The House Judiciary committee just voted to recommend that the entire House hold the Attorney General in contempt. Meanwhile the committee under congressman Jerry Nadler is moving down the path to a protracted court battle over obtaining the entire unredacted Mueller Report and all backup evidence. Former FBI director Jim Comey says that President Trump will be indicted for obstruction of justice once his term has ended. Nancy Pelosi says Trump has created a constitutional crisis by refusing to cooperate with new congressional investigations into the same subject that Mueller just investigated for years. Trump is stonewalling and engaging in a coverup, or so the Dems and the media will tell you over and over and over and over. But what is actually going on here?
The truth is that the Democrats and the media have a major problem. They promised their leftist base that Mueller would bring down President Trump for colluding with the Russians to steal the 2016 election. Instead, Mueller cleared the President of this charge. There was no collusion; it was all an charge with no evidence to back it up. How are the media and the Dems to proceed now? On top of that problem, is an even bigger one. The evidence is coming out that the entire Russia investigation was just a ploy to try to oust Trump despite the election results. We know also that the Obama administration ran an intelligence operation to spy on the Trump campaign in 2016. In order to set this up, various high officials lied to the FISA court to get warrants to allow the surveillance. This was not carelessness; there is written proof that prior to the submissions made to the FISA court, the intelligence agencies were warned that the Trump dossier on which the entire application was based was a fraud paid for by the Democrats and Hillary Clinton so as to attack Trump. The application falsely claimed that this dossier was verified information as required by the rules. And who signed the first application for a warrant and swore to its accuracy while knowing it was a lie? Jim Comey among others did, that's who.
But it gets worse for the Dems. They could have lived with the truth about the FISA warrants and even the spying coming out. They would just have run stories arguing whether it was spying or surveillance (as they are doing) even though the two are the same thing. The problem for the Democrats is that the Attorney General says he is investigating this matter. AG Barr is no patsy. If his investigation shows criminal conduct, he is likely to get indictments of the perpetrators.
Imagine what will happen if Jim Comey is indicted for perjuring himself on the application for the FISA warrant. He could also be indicted for illegally disclosing classified information by leaking FBI memoranda. We know he did this; he already admitted as much. Comey must be very worried. He's trying to prepared the ground so that if he gets indicted, he can try to claim that it was nothing but retaliation for his truth telling with regard to the President. And what happens if John Brennan, and Clapper and Yates and Susan Rice and Loretta Lynch get indicted for illegally spying on the Trump campaign and others? How to the Democrats spin those indictments? They are panic stricken that this is coming. They are trying to destroy the credibility of the Justice Department by portraying it as doing nothing but trying to protect Trump.
The ultimate problem for the Dems is that there seems to be ample evidence of wrongdoing by these people and the crimes likely to be alleged are not hard to understand. The anti-Trump defense will probably be enough to keep the rabid Democrat base on board, but the vast middle of the country isn't going to buy it. The 2016 election and its aftermath could lead to a blowout in 2020 for Trump and the GOP.
