A Washington Tragedy

Consider this:  what is the result of telling people that their failures in life (which we all have) are the result of the acts of someone else?  You know what I mean.  If you tell your co-worker that his failure to get promoted is because the supervisor does not like him, what will the co-worker do?  If you tell your friend that few people are coming to her sandwich shop because your neighbor is telling people that she is a bad person, what will your friend do?  Actually, the better question is what will your co-worker and your friend NOT do.  The answer is simple:  neither of them will try to work hard to improve job performance (the co-worker) or sandwich quality (the friend).  Instead, they both will get angry at the injustice of what the supervisor or the neighbor is saying.  As a result, nothing will change for the better.

In many ways, this is what happens these days in president Obama's Washington.  If the state of North Carolina becomes the 34th state to pass a photo ID law for voting, Eric Holder comes out and announces that this is designed to suppress minority voting.  You get it, this is a racist move by the North Carolina legislature controlled by those evil Republicans.  If unemployment figures for African Americans remain much higher than those for any other group, we hear from Washington that it is the result of racism.  According to Washington, the wealthy keep down the poor, the whites keep down the minorities, and so on.  This is a tragedy of immense proportions.

How many people across America are not trying harder to succeed because Obama's Washington is telling them that the deck is stacked against them?  How many kids in school have given up trying because they have been told by Obama's Washington that they cannot succeed?  How many minority businesses were not started because Obama's Washington told their owners that it would be an unfair uphill slog to try to go ahead and try?  How many people in North Carolina will decide next year that bad conditions there are the result of voter suppression when the truth is something else?

It is without a doubt that actual racism in society needs to be confronted and dispatched.  On the other hand, the constant raising of the false specter of racism does incalculable harm to America.  Race and class differences are much too incendiary to lie about for political gain.  Sure, Obama and the Obamacrats may get some temporary advantage with demagoguery, but the country suffers as a result.  Some day, hopefully soon, these folks will decide to do what is good for the country and they will stop the nonsense.
