An Empty Warning

Syria and Iran both warned the USA today not to take military action against the Assad forces for their use of chemical weapons.  The Assad foreign minister said that any action by America would "set the Middle East ablaze."  Similar words were used by the Iranians.

Are they kidding?  American action would set the Middle East ablaze?  In the last two years, 120,000 people have been killed in the fighting in Syria alone.  On top of that there have been at least three times that number wounded and literally millions have been left homeless.  Also there have been dueling bombings with much death in Lebanon.  Oh, and let's not forget all those people killed in Egypt in the last two weeks.  And then there are those who were killed in Iraq.  But it will be American actions that will set the Middle East ablaze.  Really?

These warnings are part of the usual guilt trip that the Middle Eastern states use so well against the West.  Think about it.  In the chemical attack earlier this week, the Assad forces killed, among hundreds of others, about three hundred Palestinians in one neighborhood of Damascus.  Have you heard about this?  Have people been marching in London or Istanbul in protest?  Are there claims of genocide against Assad for the killing of the Palestinians?  Of course not.  Now, imagine a similar situation in which Israeli forces kill thirty (instead of three hundred) Palestinians.  The UN would hold special sessions to condemn Israel, there would be marches across Europe to protest, there would be rioting in various locations in the Middle East, etc.

The truth is that Assad and his partner Iran have already set the Middle East ablaze.  They are the ones who are killing day and night.

America ought not listen to either the Syrians or the Iranians.  To harken back to an old Saddam Hussein expression, the Syrians and the Iranians are the mothers of all liars.
