The New Prime Time Lineup on Cable News

There has been a lot of talk about new programs during prime time on the cable news networks.  Yesterday came word that Megyn Kelly would get a show during the 9 pm hour on Fox.  No one knows for certain if that is correct and whether or not she would be joining Sean Hannity or replacing him at that time.  Then came the story that Alec Baldwin will be getting his own show on MSNBC at 10 PM on Fridays.  Again, this is an unconfirmed story.

First let's talk about Baldwin.  It seems that MSNBC must never have heard about Baldwin's stint as a radio host.  He tried out to get his own show and it was a disaster.  In truth, it was worse than a disaster.  He could not get anyone to call in to the show and he had to fill time.  He ran out of things to say and, since he did not have writers and had to rely on his own wits, he failed miserably.  It seems crazy to think that he will have more success when he has his own TV show on which to fill time each week.  I realize that the Friday time slot that he has been given already has extremely low ratings, but one would think that MSNBC would at least want to try to compete during that time.

Now let's move on to Kelly.  She is clearly a good bet to succeed in prime time.  First, she looks great.  Second, she is extremely smart and is not afraid to speak her mind.  That means she has lots to say and what she says is interesting.  She will do well.  Of course, that leaves Sean Hannity as a question mark.  Personally, I cannot watch his show or even listen to his radio show since he repeats himself so much.  Nevertheless, he has a loyal audience and I doubt that Fox wants to risk losing it.  It will be interesting to see how Roger Ailes sets the new lineup.
