Perversions of Race at the Department of Justice

Think about this:  Start with a failing school, one that has received very low ratings based upon the quality of the education provided to students.  Next add a program in which a state says that students who are attending these failing schools will be given vouchers that can be used to attend private schools in the area.  In this way, at least some of the kids in these failing schools can be rescued from a substandard education and given the chance to excel.  Is this a good program?

This is a real example.  In Louisiana, the state has a relatively new law that actually gives out these vouchers to students at failing schools.  The vast majority of the kids getting this break are African American.  Literally thousands of kids are getting a chance for a good education due to the program.

Now throw in the Justice Department in the mix.  Late last week, the federal government sued the state of Louisiana to bar distribution of the vouchers.  This was done on the grounds that the vouchers damage the desegregation of the schools.  As a result, DOJ wants the court to bar any distribution of vouchers in any school district which is the subject of a desegregation order.  And to be clear, DOJ is talking about any desegregation order issued since the Brown v. Board of Education decision in 1954.

This lawsuit is a perversion of racial equality.  The students being affected are nearly all African American kids who go to schools with large black majorities.  That means that the departure of these children for private schools will improve integration in the schools left behind, and it will also improve integration in the private schools to which the kids move.  But here's the catch:  a few of the kids using the vouchers are white.  That means that the DOJ can point to the departure of these kids and solemnly speak about how they want to preserve integration.

What is actually happening is that the federal government is using race to attack voucher programs, perhaps the most hated program in the country by, you guessed it, the teachers' unions.  Voucher programs put pressure on teachers to do a good job or they will get laid off as the numbers of kids decline as transfers mount.  The teachers' union are probably the strongest supported of the Democrats across the country.  So the Obama Department of Justice is going to keep black kids in underperforming schools where they get deficient educations just in order to throw a bone to the teachers' unions.  It is disgusting.
