Leaks From Obama

The news today is filled with reports that American warships are heading towards Syria.  None of the reports give a source for the information about the deployment of our armed forces; it just comes from leaks from high administration sources.

Think about this.  We know that the Syrians have Russian anti-ship missiles.  Not all that long ago, the Israeli air force attacked a storage depot where some (or all) of those missiles were located.  Alerting the Assad forces and their allies in Iran and Hezbollah that the American navy is closing in means that the sailors on those ships are being put in danger of being attacked.  Now I do not believe that the Syrians will strike first, but it is certainly possible that if the US navy attacks, the Syrians will be ready to return fire with these missiles.  In other words, anyone who leaks the location of the navy ships is placing our servicemen in the line of fire.  Had this been done by Edward Snowden, we would be hearing about how his acts were treason or at least criminal.  Had this been done by Bradley Manning, we would be learning about his sentence to a military prison.  This leak, however, came directly from those around the president (if not from Obama himself).  As a result, it is just "news" rather than treason or criminal activity.

The sad thing is that the leak forces me to believe that this is just another of those endless and meaningless public relations moves that come from Obama and his people.  Since there are many calls for action, Obama is moving ships and telling the world that he is doing so.  Maybe that will take the pressure off of him for his multiple failures in dealing with Syria.  At least, that is his hope.  The truth is that I just cannot believe that an American president would place US forces in harm's way just for his own political gain; not even Obama, who clearly dislikes the military, would do that.  So, as a result, I have to believe that Obama has no intention to attack Syria.

Of course, it is possible that Obama and his advisors are just such amateurs that they really are getting ready to attack and thought it would help if they warned the Syrians first.  After all, the National Security Advisor is now Susan Rice who yesterday took to Twitter to threaten Assad.  She tweeted "What is Assad hiding?" and demanded that Syria give immediate access to weapons inspectors who could determine for certain if the chemical weapons had been used.  Rice added that if Assad refused the world would know that he was "lying again".

That was some threat by Rice on Twitter.  Imagine, silence by Assad means he is lying again.  The man must be writing to Teheran right now for advice.  I bet he signs his cable to the Ayatollah as "Distraught in Damascus".  Of course, Assad is lying.  This is only the 1000th time we have seen this.  Nothing happened the last 999 times, so Assad clearly does not care.  Rice is an idiot.
