I often write about Tom Friedman, the New York Times columnist with an amazing ability to miss reality. His Sunday column, however, startled even me for just how off the wall it truly was. I am not going to bother you with a discussion of the whole thing, but I will just set forth for you the first sentence which really tells you all you need to know.
I’VE (sic) spent the last few months filming a Showtime documentary about how climate and environmental stresses helped trigger the Arab awakening.
Get it? Global Warming caused the Arab Spring. Global Warming caused the civil war in Syria. Global Warming caused the demonstrations in Egypt and the overthrow of both Mubarak and Mosni. Global Warming led to a new government in Tunisia. Global Warming? Global Warming!!!
It is hard to imagine a more ridiculous thesis than this, but here is a columnist for the Times who will put forth this nonsense on a national TV network. There will surely be some people who see this film and who nod in agreement. But really! Global Warming caused the Arab Spring?
The funny thing, of course, is that according to the worldwide temperature records kept by NASA, there has not been any warming for the last 13 years. One has to wonder how a phenomenon that stopped happening 13 years ago cause the Arab Spring. I am sure that Friedman has an answer to that question; most likely he refuses to accept NASA's temperature records as valid.
I just hope that when Friedman's piece appears on Showtime, it is listed as a tragedy, because that is what it is.
