Remember last March when the world was told that the Assad regime forces in Syria had used chemical weapons? Well, the big news today is that the United Nations is sending inspectors to determine whether or not such weapons were used.
Sadly, this news is not funny. Nearly six months after Assad used chemical weapons on his countrymen, the UN is finally getting to "review" the situation in person. Is there really anyone who believes that these inspectors are going to find anything after all this time? What is the point here? And if the UN finds that Assad did use chemical weapons, what will happen next? Will there be a move to impose sanctions in 2019? Is that far off enough for the UN?
The truth is that Assad was told by the world and particularly by president Obama that his use of chemical weapons would be unacceptable and would lead to consequences. So far, the only consequences has been that Obama and the UN both look foolish.
