Through The Looking Glass in Washington Today

I did not attend today's rally in Washington to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1963 march led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  It was just too strange and distorted.

Think about it.  Here you have a rally at which tens of thousands of people attended where the principal speaker about racial justice was Al Sharpton.  Al Sharpton!!!  Sharpton is the race baiting huckster who promoted the phony Tawana Brawley saga all those years ago in New York.  In that case, Sharpton kept repeating phony allegations of rape against local cops and lawyers in and around Newburgh, NY all based upon the false claims of Brawley.  The end result of this quest for "justice" was a major upsurge of racial hatred, the near destruction of the lives and careers of those who Sharpton accused, and ultimately a judgment in court against Sharpton for defamation of these innocent men.  Sharpton is also the instigator of major demonstrations in front of a store on 125th Street in Harlem which was owned by a white man.  By the time Sharpton was done protesting about white owned businesses in black communities, members of the mob he engendered fire bombed the store and eleven people died.  Ironically, each of the dead was a black or Hispanic employee at the store.  As with the Brawley case, Sharpton never apologized.  And who can forget Sharpton's major contribution to the race riots in Crown Heights.  These riots began with a tragic accident in which a young black boy was hit by a car and killed in that neighborhood.  Since the car was carrying a local Hasidic rabbi, Sharpton said things to incite racial animosity for the "slaying" of the child.  Grief was transformed into rage with rioting, murder and mayhem the result.

Sharpton is such a race baiter that one of the first acts of Rudy Giuliani upon becoming mayor of New York was to bar Sharpton from access to City Hall.  Oh, Sharpton could walk into the building, but the members of Giuliani's administration were told not to speak to him.  Sharpton lost his power to affect and afflict New York City and he almost disappeared.  Sharpton's new ploy was to run for office, something he did repeatedly with total failure on his part each time.

But then, MSNBC resurrected Sharpton.  NBC put this purveyor of racial hatred on the air five times per week.  Okay, he has no audience, but he still has the patina of respectability that comes with his own television show.  It is disgusting.

The truth is that Sharpton is about as far from Dr. King as one could get.   It is an insult to King's memory that Sharpton was allowed to speak today.
