He Must Really Scare Them

Ted Cruz has been the junior senator from Texas for the last seven months.  That's the same length of time that Elizabeth Warren has been a senator from Massachusetts or Chris Murphy has been the senator from Connecticut.  Of the three, Warren had the highest profile race; the media loved covering her run against Scott Brown.  The Cruz campaign got more coverage than the Murphy campaign just because Texas is so much bigger than Connecticut.  Once these three hit Washington, however, the media focus changed.  No one has heard much from Murphy since he was sworn in.  That is true even here in Connecticut.  Warren, who had the history of big media coverage, has also sunk out of sight for the most part.  Cruz, however, has become a constant presence in the press.  Much of the coverage has been relentlessly dishonest and negative, but there has been a tidal wave of press about Cruz nevertheless.  It is an extremely interesting phenomenon.

The simple truth is that Cruz scares much of the liberal media.  He came to Washington and immediately began doing what the left says it likes:  he began speaking truth to power.  Cruz doesn't rant.  He does not take outlandish positions the way that some in Congress do.  He is consistently conservative, but he is also consistently thoughtful and reasonable.  Don't confuse what I am saying.  Cruz is neither thoughtful or reasonable as far as the liberal media is concerned; after all, he is a conservative so he cannot be either to the media.  If one actually hears Cruz speak on the issues, however, one finds out quickly that Cruz is an extremely intelligent and well spoken man who has well thought out positions that are both logical and reasonable.  In short, Cruz is a liberal's nightmare.

Because of this, the demonization of Ted Cruz by the media is in full swing.  I noticed this today when Drudge linked to the CNN story about whether or not Cruz is eligible to run for president.  The CNN story was unintentionally hilarious.  Wolf Blitzer went to a correspondent who breathlessly announce that the big story and the big question was whether Cruz was a "natural born citizen" so that he could run for the office.  While the reporter did not explain why this was even a question, it is because Cruz was born to American parents while they were in Canada.  Under the law, Cruz was an American citizen from birth, so he is a natural born citizen.  But let's go back to CNN.  What made the report so funny was that after a big buildup about the big "question", the reporter said that she had spoken to many experts on the Constitution and that every one said Cruz was a natural born citizen and could run for president.  Then the reporter summed up by indicating that there was still an open question.  So CNN did a report about a non-issue, got told by the experts that is was a non-issue, and then summed up by telling viewers that it was a real issue.

I doubt very much if Cruz will be the GOP candidate in 2016.  Nevertheless, the left is clearly worried about that prospect.  Just imagine, the first Hispanic president could be a conservative.  Oh, the horror!
