The latest of the so called unintended consequences of Obamacare has been revealed. According to the New York Times, 3.9 million people who are spouses or dependents of employees of small businesses could lose their coverage because of the way the Democrats fashioned Obamacare. These are people now covered by family health plans. Many small businesses provide health insurance for their employees but require the worker to pay much or all of the cost of insurance for his or her spouse and children. In businesses that offer coverage that does not comply with the Obamacare minimums, the plans will have to be upgraded as of the first of the year. That will raise the cost above what most of the employees can afford. For businesses with less than 50 full time employees, there is no requirement to provide the insurance, but most will continue to do so. The cost will force the families off the plan. Further, these people will not be able to get coverage from the exchanges since they are not eligible for subsidies. In short, most of these folks will just lose coverage.
Add these 3.9 million people losing coverage with the millions more who will no longer be able to afford the insurance even with federal subsidies and it seems likely that more people will lose coverage under Obamacare than the numbers that will actually get insured for the first time.
