In a remarkable article, Buzzfeed reports on the closed door briefing of the Senate Banking Committee by Secretary of State John Kerry. Kerry was supposed to be reporting back to the Committee on the negotiations with Iran because that committee is considering proposed legislation to tighten the sanctions on that nation. Here are the highlights of what happened at the briefing:
1. Kerry did not provide any of the details about the possible deal being discussed with the Iranians. This was a classified briefing of the folks who are considering sanctions, but Kerry would not tell them any details as to why they should not approve those sanctions.
2. Kerry repeatedly told the senators not to believe what they were told by the Israelis. According to one senator, the Israeli intelligence services calculated that the "concessions" sought from Iran in exchange for dramatic relaxation of the sanctions would delay the Iranian nuclear weapons program by less than one month. Kerry offered no information to counter this; he only said that the Israelis should not be believed.
3. Kerry told reporters before going into the briefing that were the Senate to pass a bill with further sanctions, it would risk "breaking faith" with Iran. It may be hard to believe, but Kerry actually talked about "breaking faith" with Iran. This is the same Iran that arms the Taliban in Afghanistan with weapons used against American troops, that sent fighters into Iraq for many years to kill American troops, that has troops in Syria at the moment who participated in the chemical weapons attack on Syrian civilians, that still considers the storming of the American embassy and the holding of our diplomats as hostages for more than a year a great national victory, that has carried out or supported terrorist movements around the globe, and which to this day refers to America as the Great Satan. Exactly what "good faith" from Iran is it that Kerry is worried about?
So Kerry is telling the Senate that our ally Israel is not telling the truth and our mortal enemy Iran is a country with whom we must keep the faith. Is Kerry so stupid that he has forgotten which one is our ally and which one is the enemy? It sure looks that way.
Yesterday, I wrote about using the first part of Kerry's name to give him a shortened moniker. I came up with "JoKe". I still think "Idiot" would be more appropriate.
