Senior British officials have told the press that the UK is acting as a conduit for secret talks between the USA and Hezbollah. According to the report, the UK got involved because America has classified Hezbollah as a terrorist organization, so by law, administration officials could not speak directly with the terrorists.
There are reasons why Hezbollah is classified as a terrorist organization. First of all, Hezbollah not only seeks to defeat Israel, but it also seeks the death of all the Jews in that country. Second, Hezbollah has on multiple occasions arranged terror attacks on American installations beginning with the bombing of that barracks housing US Marines nearly 30 years ago that resulted in the death of over 200 troops. The marines in question were in Lebanon as peacekeepers as part of an international mission arranged to try to end the violence that had plagued that country. Hezbollah also sent fighters into Iraq during the Iraq war to try to kill Americans. Third, there have been bombings, hijackings and other terror acts around the globe carried out by Hezbollah over the last few decades.
If the negotiations were aimed at ending terror acts by Hezbollah, they would still be illegal, but at least they would be somewhat understandable. According to the British sources, however, the talks are aimed at preparing for the time when sanctions against Iran, the main sponsor of Hezbollah, are ended. Obama is acting as if a deal with Iran about nuclear weapons makes the terror acts by Hezbollah somehow acceptable. A deal with Iran is unlikely, but it does not excuse the murder of innocent people by Hezbollah ever, period.
One thing is certain. If the Israelis ever believed that they could rely on the good intentions or even the word of Barack Obama, they know better now. Now if the American people would just realize the same thing, we would all be better off.
