The Arrogance of Media Pundits

The second GOP debate is tonight.  That means that this morning and for the last few days the pundits are all explaining what the main Republican candidates "have to do" to "win" or "survive" that debate.  Really?  The pundits are telling us what the candidates must do?  Are they kidding?

Think about it.  A few months back, these same pundits told us Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush were the inevitable candidates.  There might be blips on the radar on occasion, but those two had it locked up because they had more money.  Now Hillary is behind in both Iowa and New Hampshire and her poll numbers have fallen to the point from which she will never recover.  Bush meanwhile has been turned into a human sloth by the comments from Trump that he is "low energy".  Jeb's poll numbers can't even get to the high single digits anymore.

The same pundits told us that Donald Trump was finished on the day he announced because he pointed out that there were criminals coming over the southern border included among the illegal aliens.  Then he was finished for criticizing John McCain.  Then he was finished for his attack on Megyn Kelly.  Then he was finished for commenting on Carly Fiorina's looks.  Then.....  Now, I have to admit that I didn't like some of these moves by Trump, but the pundits really got it wrong.  Trump has moved to first place although his numbers have stopped going up in the last few weeks.

Then we ought to recall how the pundits told us right after the last debate that Marco Rubio had won and had done what he needed to do.  Rubio's numbers have fallen since then.

The truth is that pundits just fill time on TV.  They really don't know any better than anyone else how these contests will go.  They might do well to remember that.
