Here are two bits of news that seem lost in the American media: 1) In Syria, the forces of Hezbollah have been given about 50 Russian tanks to incorporate into the forces fighting near the Lebanese border. Until now, the terrorists at Hezbollah have never had armor for use in fighting. 2) The Russian forces in Syria are being positioned to fight not against ISIS but rather against the other Sunni forces that have been opposing both the Assad regime and ISIS. The result of any battle by the Russians against these forces will help, not hurt, the position of ISIS in the country.
So what do these two news items mean? Clearly, the Russians are helping the pro Assad forces crush the Sunni opposition other than ISIS. It looks like there is a tacit agreement between Assad and ISIS to partition Syria. That will leave us with a Western Syria under the control of a belligerent war criminal (Assad) and an Eastern Syria under the control of the crazies at ISIS. The clear loser in all of this will be the 75% of the Syrian people who are Sunni as well as the 12% or so of the population that are Druze, Christian, or Yazidi. Most likely, this 12% will be the target of genocide.
With all this happening, president Obama is doing nothing.
