With the continuing build up of Russian forces in Syria, one has to wonder what the end game is for Vladimir Putin. Will the Russians try to take control in Syria. That may sound like something requiring a big effort, but that may not be the case. Right now, the Assad forces are on the verge of collapse. The rebel forces have been pounded both by Assad forces and by ISIS and are also weak. Then there's ISIS. In Syria, the various armies are most capable of inflicting death and injuries on the civilians, but they are not in condition to present a major military obstacle to a well organized and well armed force like the one the Russians are inserting. In short, were the Russians to put 100,000 troops into Syria, they could probably crush the opposition and take over the country. There would be guerilla forces fighting against the Russians for a while, but the Russians would most likely be able to crush those groups as well.
What happens at that point? Maybe the Russians could annex Syria.
Okay, I'm not serious, but we really don't know what Putin plans. Unlike president Obama, at least I'm thinking about the issue.
