A Question To Consider

Suppose you heard twenty years ago on TV that there was a new virus that had been discovered that caused progressive physical deterioration and that computer simulations of infection with the virus showed that it would result in death in about six years.  Suppose you also heard that the virus was spreading at an alarming rate across the world.  What would your response be?  If you are like most people, you would want both the government, pharmaceutical firms and major medical research centers to devote themselves to finding a cure.

Now let's add some new factors.  During the five years after the discovery of the virus was announced, there were many plans put forward to fight the virus, but none of them could be shown to work.  As a result during that five year period, there was non-stop publicity about the threat caused by the virus.  Symptom after symptom found in the population was attributed to the advancing virus, although for the most part this was done by the media rather than by doctors or scientists.  Meanwhile, a huge infrastructure gets built for research into finding a cure for the virus.  What would your response be?  Again, if you are like most people, you would want all the programs to fight the virus to continue and even be enlarged in the hope of quickly finding a cure.

Okay, let's move forward again.  Suppose during the next fifteen years, it was discovered that no one was dying from the virus.  In fact, none of the symptoms that were predicted by the computer simulations are surfacing among the world population.  The death rate is unchanged.  The presence of degenerative conditions is unchanged.  Meanwhile, the huge industry of fighting the virus is continuing with the support of massive government funding.  What would your response be?

Anyone who is paying attention would have realized by the end of that additional fifteen years, that the original predictions about the virus were just wrong.  Those forecasts predicted the onset of massive numbers of people lost to the virus after six years, but after 20 years, none of those deaths have materialized.  With no cure for the virus having been discovered,  humanity is still moving forward with no ill effects.  That means that there is no need to spend a fortune trying to find a cure for a virus that has no ill effects.  Those involved in the effort to find a cure would, of course, not be happy.  After all, their jobs would be threatened.  Even so, it would make no sense to spend billions of dollars looking to cure a disease which does not seem to exist.

That is where we are today with regard to Global Warming (or Climate Change if you're a true believer.)  In the 1990's we were told that the massive amounts of carbon dioxide being pumped into the atmosphere would cause massive heating of the Earth.  The result was a massive amount of government funding for study of global warming and a major power grab by government in order to fight this terrible scourge.  Nevertheless, nothing got done that would solve the problem.  We were told that by 2010, the polar ice caps would have melted, the seas would have risen by at least a foot, the number of severe weather storms would have soared and the world temperature would be up substantially.  For the last 18 years, however, the average air temperature around the globe measured by weather satellites has been unchanged.  Oh, there have been fluctuations, but the data shows no generalized increase of any sort and certainly no warming of the sort predicted by the global warming theorists.  Severe storms have actually become much less frequent.  The amount of ice in the polar caps has risen dramatically.  The oceans also have not risen.  In any rational world, the inescapable conclusion would be that global warming theory is at a minimum severely flawed or else completely wrong.

Sadly, that rational reaction has not been forthcoming.  Instead, the global warming crowd are still pushing their failed theory as if it were accurate.  Whole segments of the country support taking action that will cripple our economy in the hopes of fighting a scourge that doesn't even seem to exist.  It is like a mass delusion of extraordinary size.

The public needs to wake up to the reality here.  Unless we stop them, the global warming crew is going to hurt the US economy and damage our future on the basis of a delusion.
