How Better To Project American Weakness

The American aircraft carrier, the Theodore Roosevelt, has been removed from the Persian Gulf by the Pentagon.  This is the first time in over ten years that the USA has not had a carrier in that body of water.  Think what it means.  First, all the air strikes on ISIS that came from the carrier will end.  Will American planes start to based in Iraq again?  That's unlikely.  The US capabilities against ISIS will just be drastically reduced.  Second, should there be any attempts by Iran to resupply the Houthi rebels in Yemen, the carrier won't be there to head them off.  We can expect a convoy to leave from Iran in the near future.  Third, should there be a threat to the flow of oil from the Persian Gulf to the rest of the world, there will be little that the USA can do to stop that threat.

The reason being given for the removal of the carrier is that military budget cuts make it too expensive to keep such a ship in the gulf all the time.  The Theodore Roosevelt is going to its home port for maintenance.  The next carrier to arrive is likely to be the Harry S. Truman in two months or more.  The White House blames sequestration for the budget cuts.  Sadly, that's a lie.  The House passed a Defense appropriations bill that increased the military budget by enough to prevent these sorts of cut backs.  The bill sets up a special fund to cover the extra costs of the operations against ISIS and across the Middle East.  When the bill got to the Senate, the Democrats launched a filibuster against it.  They held the US military hostage to their demands that sequestration limits be done away with completely and all sorts of spending be raised across the board.  The removal of the carrier is just another way for president Obama to pressure the senate Republicans to agree to raise all spending the way he wants.  If ISIS gets an advantage, if Iraqis and Syrians dies as a result, if American troops stationed in Iraq are left without air cover, Obama does not care so long as he can get his way on domestic spending.

It's really a disgusting political move by Obama and his party.
