Sometimes president Obama still has the ability to surprise me. He did it again today. Obama vetoed that Defense Appropriations Bill. For this entire year, we keep hearing from the Obama administration and the Pentagon that in view of the ongoing fight against ISIS and Obama's order to keep troops in Afghanistan longer than he promised, there was a shortage of funds for the military and that an increase was needed for national defense. Congress, therefore, increased that funding in this latest bill. Obama praised the bill for the increase in funding, but then he vetoed it because of two reasons: the bill took no steps to allow increased funding of domestic programs and the bill continued the ban on bringing prisoners from Guantanamo to the USA. The Commander in Chief decided to hold the armed forces hostage to his plans from Gitmo and to raising spending on other items. It's unbelievable that while Americans are fighting in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan as well as elsewhere, Obama would veto adequate funding for these troops so that he can transfer terrorists from Gitmo to the mainland.
The headline from the AP on this story is "Obama vetoes $612 billion defense bill in rebuke to GOP". That's wrong. Obama vetoed the bill in a rebuke to America's fighting men and women.
If Obama wants to raise spending on domestic programs, he can focus his attention on the bills that provide that spending. Why must he threaten the well being of our military forces in order to get his way.
