Two things happened today that brings attention back to senator Harry Reid, the leader of the Democrats in the U. S. Senate. First, Reid led the Democrats to filibuster a bill called Kate's Law. If you are not familiar with Kate's Law, here's exactly what it does.
Under Kate's Law, a person (1) who has been convicted of a felony and (2) who has been deported from the USA will go to prison for five years in the event he or she returns illegally into the country. The Democrats led by Reid denounce the bill as anti-immigrant. Have they lost their minds? If the illegal immigrants in question are guilty of a major crime (a felony) and then get deported, Kate's Law provides a penalty that hopefully will keep this scum from coming back into the country. And by the way, for those of you who think that calling the criminals who get deported "scum" is some sort of racist or nativist attack, I suggest you seek psychiatric help in dealing with your delusions.
Kate's law is named after Kate Steinle who was murdered, at random, by an illegal criminal who had been deported from the country multiple times. Worst of all, the senators from California where this all took place supported the filibuster.
The second adventure in idiocy by senator Reid today came in the form of his trying to upset the House Republicans in their attempts to pick a new Speaker. Reid endorsed Paul Ryan for the office. I'm sure that Ryan wants an endorsement from Reid just about as much as he wants to be exposed to the Ebola virus.
There is one solace here. Reid is retiring after this term. He will return to the private sector. One does wonder what Reid's four sons, each of whom is a lobbyist, will do once daddy is no longer around.
