A Short Review of History

Given all that gets said in today's world, I thought it might be worthwhile to put forward a short quiz regarding American history.

1.  The Environmental Protection Agency was established by Executive Order of a president.  Was that president:

c.  Richard Nixon, Republican of California
d.  Dwight Eisenhower, Republican of Texas

2.  Which president order the segregation of the US armed forces:

b. Theodore Roosevelt, Republican of New York
c.  Woodrow Wilson, Democrat of New Jersey
d.  Warren Harding, Republican of Ohio

3.  Which president sought and obtained the passage of the 13th Amendment to the constitution ending slavery?

a.  Ulysses S. Grant, Republican
b.  Abraham Lincoln, Republic
c.  Andrew Jackson, Democrat
d.  Benjamin Harrison, Republican

4.  Which party imposed the Jim Crow laws across the South that institutionalized racial restrictions on African Americans:

a.  Democrats
b.  Republicans

5.  Which party put over a hundred thousand Americans of Japanese descent into concentration camps during World War II:

a.  Democrats
b.  Republicans

6.  Which party passed a graduated income tax that taxed the wealthy at higher rates than those with lower incomes:

a.  Democrats
b. Republicans

7.  Which party was formed to fight the evil of slavery:

a.  Democrats
b. Republicans

8.  Which party took the position that Southern states ought to be allowed to keep their slaves?

a.  Democrats
b.  Republicans

The answers are 1(c) - Nixon created the EPA; 2(c) Wilson segregated the armed forces; 3(b) Lincoln gained freedom for the slaves; 4(a) Democrats passed the Jim Crow laws; 5(a) Democrats imprisoned the Japanese Americans in camps during World War II; 6(b) Republicans first imposed higher taxes on the wealthy; 7(b) the Republican party was formed to fight slavery; and 8(a) even as the Civil War progressed, Democrats wanted to let the South keep its slaves.

Every so often, I think it is important to remind people that throughout American history, the Democrats have been the party that supported slavery and promoted racial discrimination, while Republicans took actions for a cleaner environment and for a fairer tax system.  Anyone who listened to the media today would think the opposite were true, but the facts are the facts.
